Actually, there are a lot of these types of chains in history. For example the Latin alphabet. Its first precursor started in ancient Egypt, then was passed onto ancient Canaanite workers in the Sinai, from there it was picked up by the Phoenicians, who in turn influenced the ancient Greeks. From this ancient Greek alphabet then arose the Latin alphabet. :)
