Another interesting tidbit that I should have mentioned is that these Barbary pirates even made it to the shores of the Americas. Often preying especially on the Newfoundland fishing fleets, they apparently spent time on the Newfoundland coast. There are several places such as Turks Cove or Turk's Gut (now Marysvale), named after these pirates (in those days referred to as Turks).
