Excellent article Stephen! A great way to separate a healthy skepticism that is needed in the modern world in order to analyze all the biased information that is coming from all sides, and the unhealthy skepticism that some people use to believe in all kinds of fringe theories and distrust of experts.
My favorite Skeptic quote is one from Sextus Empiricus:
“And many people who have ugly mistresses think them beautiful."
I laughed when I came across that one in his writing.
And another one from Cicero on the judgment of probability. This one for me is a guiding light on how to approach the news. For me, it can be paired with Bayesian reasoning in order to better judge how things work.
“There is no presentation of such a sort as to result in perception, but many that result in a judgement of probability.”
