Funny thing that this reminds me of my trip to Egypt. If you go a bit past the pyramids into the desert, where all the camel guys take tourists on camels, but you go on foot, there is a lot of stuff scattered on the ground. I even found a stone which had a hole drilled through it, just like you describe. I picked it up, but tossed it aside. I was really tempted to take it with me, but decided not to. You are not supposed to take ancient stuff out of Egypt. I should have at least taken a picture of it. Also that area is littered with rocks containing fossils of seashells.
