I too am a generalist and like to write about anything that comes to my mind, although in most cases it tends to be a mix of philosophy, history, science, and self-help.
I started off with my own blog, but for years I couldn't get traction. I discovered Medium through the fact that I started seeing a slow trickle of visitors from the Medium page. This was because some authors of articles quoted stuff from my blog. I was amazed at how many people were reading their article, while my original stuff which they based it on was all crickets.
So I started writing on Medium. This increased my readership, since you have to be where the readers are if you want to be read. The old days of just putting stuff out there on the internet and it would be discovered ended in the early 2000's. Unfortunately, I joined Medium a bit too late to see the wild success of the writers that joined earlier.
I have a full-time job, so writing is just a side project of mine. Would love to see it take off, but let's see. I don't like self-promotion, and am too lazy to try experimenting with various platforms. So at the moment, I am sticking with Medium as my main writing platform, and my blog as the backup. In the future, I might try Substack, but I would need to build up some sort of an audience first in order to justify the effort.
