I was not a math person when I was in school. I got good grades and took hard classes, but I sort of didn't get it (at least the higher level stuff like calculus). I could get the how, but with harder math could never understand the why. Unfortunately back then the internet was only getting started, so there weren't many resources available to better understand the why. If I were a young learner now, I would definitely spend a lot more time on trying to get at the why. That way math wouldn't be something I had to "learn" and memorize, but something more intuitive.
