I would probably classify "hypnotic subscription" as one form of stupidity. Especially in terms of things like mindless consumerism. The thing about Bonhoeffer's treatise on stupidity is that it was originally written in German, and the word he used has been translated either as "stupidity" or "folly" in different English-language translations.

I take Bonhoeffer’s theory of stupidity more as a good description of the state of affairs, rather than a call to action. I pair it with Harry Frankfurt’s “On Bullshit” (which I wrote about here), as a way to see what is happening in the world at large.
