The US was, and still is a colonial power to some extent. Although part of this expansion was done the same way Russia expanded across the continental landmass. Now Russia also had a few overseas colonies, namely Alaska, but also a small part of California around Fort Ross, plus some islands in Hawaii (not to mention a brief fort called Sagallo in the Horn of Africa).

The US expanded on the continent, but also had and still has overseas colonies. Alaska, and Hawaii have become states now. However, there is also Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, numerous islands in the Pacific like Guam or American Samoa. And at one point it also had the Philippines. So it controlled the archipelago which was right next to the Dutch-controlled Indonesia.
